Emiliano, Sala Taffarel (31 October 1990 – 21 January 2019). The tragic death that left the footballing world in devastation. The Argentine-born footballer started his professional playing career in Bordeaux France, making his professional debut on February 2012.
Emiliano found it hard to break into the first team sent out on consecutive loan spells to Orléans and Niort respectively. He finally switched to Nantes on a permanent basis in 2015 after a brief stint in Caen in the Ligue 1.
Sala enjoyed the best period of his career in Nantes. He made over a 100 appearances, recording the top goal scorer in the club for three consecutive seasons. But he chose to sign for english premier league side Cardiff City on 19th January 2019 for a club record fee of £15 million.
During his flight from France to Wales on a private single turbine Malibu plane, piloted by 59-year-old, David Ibbotson on the 22nd of January, his plane went missing over the English channel.
Nothing was found after an initial three-day search. A privately funded vessel found the wreckage on the 3rd of february, after a six-hour search with sonar equipment. Consequently, Sala’s body was later identified in the wreckage.
Sala sent a rambling WhatsApp audio message to his family while onboard the plane.
“We’re up in the plane and it seems it’s about to crash, If you have not heard anything from me in an hour and a half, I don’t know if they’re going to send someone to find me, because they’re not going to be able to. ”
The air accident investigation branch (AAIB) of the UK are carrying out Investigations to determine the cause of the accident. Though initial indications are pointing to poor weather conditions as the cause, but nothing official yet. It could be a couple of months before any definitive answer would be giving by the (AAIB).
Sala’s body was pulled out of the wreckage in the English channel sea bed of the guernsey just off the coast of alderney. David ibbotson’s body is yet to be found.His family are trying to raise the funds to resume the search for his body which would amount to the sum of £300,000.
Fans and team mates world wide have come together to share their collective support and condolences for the departed Sala. Tribute to the young argentine has been going on since the unfortunate incident.
